Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikic has filed a request to trademark his famous gesture, which captured global media attention during this summer's Paris Olympics. His coach, Erdinç Bilgili, confirmed to Agence France-Presse (AFP) that this move was in response to attempts by others to exploit and trademark the gesture without Dikic's consent.
Dikic, a former sergeant in the gendarmerie, drew attention during the 10-meter air pistol mixed team competition, where he won a silver medal. Remarkably, Dikic used no special shooting equipment and placed his left hand in his pocket while aiming, as if he were shooting in his backyard. This unique style amazed everyone, earning him comparisons to the fictional character "James Bond" by some.
The distinctive gesture quickly spread among athletes and fans alike, with even American billionaire Elon Musk mimicking it in a video he posted on social media. According to Bilgili, an application to trademark the gesture was submitted to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office about a week ago, and other applications submitted by different parties have been rejected.
Since winning the silver medal, Dikic's gesture has inspired many athletes, including Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, who celebrated his goal against Crystal Palace in the English Premier League with a similar move. The Turkish news channel TRT Haber also reported that Dikic's image has been featured on various memorabilia, including shirts, mugs, and phone cases.
Despite the widespread attention, Dikic emphasized that his famous gesture has a simple explanation, noting that he puts his hand in his pocket merely to keep his body balanced while aiming.
